At Daintree Deep Forest Lodge we believe holidays are for relaxing, slowing down and enjoying good company, good food, good wine and some exotic sights. To this end we have established a serene location, immersed in the rainforest jungle. There are no crowds, no telephones and no television. You are in the company of nature, ancient and undisturbed for the past 110 millions years. You listen to the calls of the birds and animals and you watch them as they move through the rainforest. It is this communion with nature that brings peace and tranquility.
The lodge is a plantation style building with verandahs all around. Each of the three ground-level apartments has French doors that open out into the garden setting and each has a private barbecue.
The apartments are fully equipped. You need to bring only your personal items, your exotic food and favourite wines. The self-catering facilities in our one-bedroom apartment consist of a full-sized refrigerator, a gas stove and oven, essential requirements for the gourmet traveler. The studio apartments have kitchenette facilities. Dining is also an exciting alternative. You have the choice of a variety of restaurants along Cape Tribulation Road. They range from the romantic candlelight dinners with a la carte menus, some of which include indigenous cuisines to café food, take-away food or hotel counter lunches. All restaurants have unique settings, near beaches, in the rainforests.
Our tariff is moderate. Although we endeavour to provide five star accommodation in comfort, cleanliness and aesthetics we do not provide additional facilities that would qualify us for resort classification. Our purpose is for you to enjoy nature. In this scenario swimming pools, tennis courts and gymnasiums are distractions and available wherever you live. We provide an undisturbed rainforest dating back 110 millions years.
Our location is central along Cape Tribulation Road also referred to as the Daintree Coast Road to distinguish the area from the Daintree Village. This road which is 32 kms long weaves through the Alexandra Range, through the Cape Tribulation section of the Daintree National Park and moves in and out of long sandy beaches. Along this road (Cape Tribulation Road) you will find access to all the Daintree Coast tourist facilities.
The Daintree Coast tourist facilities are a community endeavour to delight and inform our visitors of this beautiful part of the world. We have numerous boardwalks built by National Parks with adjacent barbecues and picnic settings, free courtesy of the National Parks Board. We are a short distance to Thornton's long sandy beach perfect for relaxing and swimming. For nature lovers there are guided walks both day and night. Two boats take visitors for day trips to The Great Barrier Reef. There are numerous river cruises that focus on bird watching and crocodile spotting. Horse trail rides or horse riding lessons are popular with the younger people. To introduce you to the rainforest environment we have our award winning Discovery Centre. Here you can climb the platform to view the canopy or study the flora along the aerial boardwalk and finally relax with a great coffee. The exotic fruit farm will introduce you to tropical fruits whose short shelf-life keeps them in obscurity. This will be a very enjoyable and tasty afternoon and very informative.
From your accommodation you can listen to the birds, watch the cassowaries walk through the lodge grounds and spot some of the rainforest creatures coming down from the rainforest canopy to feed at night. The grounds abound with tropical plants and seasonal rainforest fruits. The size of the leaves will amaze. This rainforest is classified as Mesophyll (big leaves) vine forests. We are home to the world's largest dragon fly and the world largest moth and the oldest flowering plants. ".. of the 19 known families of primitive flowering plants (angiosperms), 12 are found in this Area.". (Wet Tropics in Profile p.16) The Wet Tropics was one, of only 13 areas on the World Heritage List of 97 to meet all four criteria. The area is recognized as an outstanding heritage to mankind.
In our wilderness political forces have prevented the implementation of mains power north of the Daintree River. We have installed a hydro water generator and solar panels. Our bank of batteries provides 24 hour power, however; we are conservative in using electricity. We use energy saving globes, gas appliances and fans. We have nature's air conditioning which comes at night in the form of catabatic breezes that flow from Thornton's Peak (1375m), the steep mountain which also forms the backdrop to Deep Forest Lodge.
